Do I Need a Panel Upgrade?

What You Can Safely Check
You do not need to remove the panel cover or touch anything inside the panel.
With the panel door open, homeowners can safely look for a few basic things:
Is there a label showing the main breaker size?
Are there empty breaker spaces available?
Are breaker labels clear enough to identify rooms and major equipment?
Do you see visible rust, water staining, melted plastic, discoloration, or other obvious damage?
Take clear photos of the panel with the door open, the main breaker label, and the area around it. Those photos can help an electrician understand the existing setup before an evaluation.
Will an EV Charger Require a Panel Upgrade?
Not always.
A dedicated EV charger requires a properly sized circuit and an evaluation of the home’s overall electrical load. A panel with open breaker spaces may still need a capacity evaluation, while a full panel does not always mean the entire service must be replaced.
The answer depends on your home’s existing service size, the equipment already connected, the charger you want, and how much power the home uses during normal operation.
The same is true for other major additions, including:
Heat pumps and air conditioning.
Electric water heaters.
Hot tubs and spas.
Induction ranges.
Garage workshops.
Home additions and large remodels.
Second EV chargers.
What Happens During a Panel Upgrade?
A panel upgrade will involve replacing the breaker box, installing new breakers, bringing grounding and bonding up to code if necessary, or increasing service capacity when the home needs more power.
The work will require coordination with the utility company and a temporary shutoff of power while the new equipment is installed.
Permits and Inspections Matter
Panel upgrades are not a simple “swap the box” project. The work should be designed for the home, installed safely, and permitted and inspected through the proper local authority.
Inside the City of Vancouver, the city offers electrical permit and inspection services. In Battle Ground and many other Clark County locations, the permitting authority is Washington Labor & Industries, depending on the property jurisdiction.
The correct process should be confirmed for the specific address before work begins.
When to Call an Electrician Right Away
Leave the panel alone and schedule professional help if you notice:
Burning smells, buzzing, crackling, sparking, or smoke.
Hot breakers, a warm panel cover, or melted/discolored plastic.
Water or corrosion around the panel.
Breakers that will not reset or trip immediately.
Visible damage to the panel or service equipment.
Frequent loss of power to part of the home.
A panel that appears unsafe, outdated, or improperly modified.
These are not “wait and see” issues. Electrical equipment that shows signs of overheating or damage should be evaluated promptly.
