How to Reset a GFCI Outlet That Won’t Work

If an outlet suddenly stops working, the problem may be simpler than it first appears. Many homes have GFCI outlets that are designed to shut off power when they detect a potential ground-fault issue.

A GFCI outlet is the type with TEST and RESET buttons on its face. It is commonly found in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, laundry rooms, unfinished areas, near sinks, and outdoors—places where electricity and moisture may be close together.

One tripped GFCI outlet can sometimes shut off power to other outlets connected downstream. That means the outlet that stopped working may not be the outlet that needs to be reset.

What Is a GFCI Outlet?

GFCI stands for ground-fault circuit interrupter.

In plain language, it is a safety device that watches the flow of electricity. If it senses that power may be going somewhere it should not—such as through water, damaged equipment, or a person—it shuts off quickly to reduce the risk of electrical shock.

GFCI protection is required in many locations in modern homes because those areas have a higher chance of moisture exposure. In Washington, the electrical code is based on the 2023 National Electrical Code, which includes expanded electrical safety requirements.

Before You Reset Anything

First, look for signs that the problem may be more serious.

Do not press RESET or continue using the outlet if you notice:

  • A burning smell.

  • Smoke, sparks, buzzing, crackling, or popping.

  • Melted plastic, scorch marks, discoloration, or a loose outlet.

  • Water around the outlet or plug.

  • A damaged cord, plug, appliance, or extension cord.

  • An outlet that feels warm or hot.

If any of these are present, stop using the circuit and call an electrician. Do not remove the outlet cover or take anything apart.

Step 1: Unplug What Is Connected

Unplug anything connected to the dead outlet or nearby outlets on the same circuit.

Pay close attention to things that use water, heat, or motors, including:

  • Hair dryers and curling irons.

  • Coffee makers and toaster ovens.

  • Microwaves and air fryers.

  • Garage tools and battery chargers.

  • Pressure washers and outdoor equipment.

  • Sump pumps.

  • Bathroom heaters.

  • Holiday lights or exterior decorations.

If an appliance or cord is wet, damaged, hot, or smells burned, leave it unplugged.

Step 2: Check the Breaker Panel

Before resetting a GFCI, check whether the breaker has tripped.

Open the panel door and look for a breaker that is in the middle position or switched off. A tripped breaker often needs to be pushed firmly all the way to OFF before it can be turned back to ON.

Do not remove the panel cover or touch any wiring inside the panel.

If the breaker immediately trips again, leave it off. That can point to an overload, damaged appliance, wiring issue, or another fault that needs professional troubleshooting.

Step 3: Look for a GFCI Outlet Nearby

The GFCI that controls a dead outlet may be somewhere else.

Check accessible outlets in the same area first, then check nearby rooms. A bathroom GFCI may protect other bathroom outlets; a garage GFCI may affect exterior outlets; and a kitchen, laundry, or utility-room GFCI may affect outlets farther away.

Look in these places:

  • Bathrooms.

  • Kitchen countertops and near the sink.

  • Garage walls.

  • Exterior outlets.

  • Laundry rooms.

  • Basements and crawlspace access areas.

  • Utility rooms.

  • Near water heaters or HVAC equipment.

  • Under sinks where a disposal or dishwasher outlet may be connected.

Step 4: Press RESET Once

Once you find a GFCI outlet:

  1. Make sure the outlet area is dry.

  2. Press the RESET button firmly once.

  3. Listen and feel for it to click into place.

  4. Check whether power returns to the outlet or the other outlets that were off.

If the reset button stays in and power returns, the GFCI may have simply tripped as designed.

If the button will not stay in, do not force it. It may not have power, the circuit breaker may be off, the device may have failed, or there may be a problem somewhere on the circuit.

Step 5: Test It Safely

If the GFCI resets and power returns, you can test the built-in protection using the buttons on the outlet:

  1. Press TEST. The outlet should click and turn off.

  2. Press RESET. Power should return.

Do not use tools, outlet testers, or open the device if you are not comfortable doing so. The TEST and RESET buttons are the only homeowner-level function you need for this check.

Why a GFCI May Keep Tripping

A GFCI can trip for a number of reasons:

  • Moisture in or near an outlet.

  • A wet or damaged appliance.

  • An outdoor outlet exposed to weather.

  • A faulty cord, plug, or appliance.

  • A damaged GFCI outlet.

  • A wiring issue somewhere farther down the circuit.

  • An older device that is no longer working properly.

If it trips once and stays reset after you remove or unplug the item that caused the problem, you may have identified the issue. If it keeps tripping or will not reset, it needs more investigation.

When to Call an Electrician

Schedule professional troubleshooting if:

  • The GFCI outlet will not reset.

  • It trips again after you reset it.

  • Multiple outlets are dead and no accessible GFCI will reset.

  • The breaker also trips.

  • You see moisture, damage, rust, scorch marks, or loose outlets.

  • You need GFCI protection added to an older home, garage, bathroom, kitchen, laundry area, or outdoor location.

  • You are unsure which outlet controls the affected area.

GFCI devices are designed to protect people from shock hazards. If one is repeatedly tripping, it may be detecting a real problem—not just being inconvenient.
